Locker room boys to IT cell men: India’s rape culture grows without shame or consequences

If Delhi school boys on Instagram privately plan to rape underage girls, then men from IT cells of political parties publicly threaten women on Twitter and Facebook.

Screenshots of a private Instagram chat group have stirred up a storm over rape culture in India. 

Several Instagram accounts yesterday (May 3) posted stories with chats from a group titled “bois locker room.” The group’s members, seemingly belonging to some reputed schools in Delhi, purportedly made derogatory comments about women and morphed their bodies in the group chat, claimed Ashnaa Sharma, a Delhi-based influencer with nearly 27,000 followers on the photo-sharing app.

Soon, the news spread on Twitter, too, and #boyslockerroom began trending. A few users even claimed to have gone to school with some of the chat group’s members.

India has a rape culture. When not making “victims” out of women — young and old, newborn and dead — it breathes life into Indian boys’ and men’s everyday public conversations and private group chats. One such private group on Instagram, Bois Locker Room, was outed on Twitter Sunday. Screenshots of Delhi school boys sharing images of underage girls, with conversations ranging from ‘jokes’ about their private parts to planning a gang rape, went viral. They finally drew the attention of the Delhi Commission for Women, which sent a notice to both the police and Instagram demanding a probe.

But while this Instagram group had about 30-35 members, thousands of locker room boys grew up into same sexist and misogynist adults a long time ago, and no one took note. As members of Indian political parties’ IT cells, they are doing publicly what Bois Locker Room boys did privately. They log into their social media accounts every day and go after women who wear ‘short clothes’, speak their mind, talk back to them, don’t worship their political leaders, or don’t ascribe to their political ideologies — everything that hits at their masculinity. IT cells of all political parties — BJP, AAP and Congress — are part of this big boys’ club. But the BJP IT cell is most notorious.

The tools deployed by these men to target women are the same — threats of gang rape, mutilation, reminders of past heinous crimes, body shaming, slut shaming, character assassination, and spreading rumours. These men reduce the existence of women to sexual intercourse and their body parts, and want to teach them a lesson by circulating their nude pictures. They don’t spare their target’s mother, sister or any female relative.

Almost all these men swear by their religion, are “nationalists and patriots”, and are followed by leading politicians of India, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Some are politicians themselves, like former MLA and BJP leader Kapil Mishra, who has targeted public figures such as Swara Bhasker, Kavita Krishnan, Shehla Rashid, Barkha Dutt, Alka Lamba in the past and most recently, directed his vulgarity at Jamia student Safoora Zargar over her pregnancy.

COVID-19 Vaccine: Israeli Defence Minister Naftali Bennett was shown the "antibody that attacks the virus in a monoclonal way and can neutralize it within the bodies of those ill", a statement from his office said.Israeli Defence Minister Naftali Bennett has said that scientists at the country's main biological research institute have made a "significant breakthrough" in developing an antibody to the novel coronavirus, as the researchers wrapped up the development phase and moved to patent and mass produce the potential treatment.

Bennett visited the labs of the Israel's Institute for Biological Research (IIBR), supervised by the Prime Minister's Office and mandated to develop a vaccine for coronavirus, in Ness Ziona on Monday and was shown the "antibody that attacks the virus in a monoclonal way and can neutralize it within the bodies of those ill", a statement from his office said.

The statement said that the antibody's development had been completed and that the institute was in the process of patenting the find "and in the next stage, researchers will approach international companies to produce the antibody on a commercial scale".

In March, Israeli daily Ha'aretz, quoting medical sources, had reported that scientists at the institute had made a significant breakthrough in understanding the biological mechanism and qualities of the virus, including better diagnostic capability, production of antibodies for those who already have the virus and development of a vaccine.

It was not immediately clear if the breakthrough presented to Bennett was in addition to progress that was reported in late March, and no further details were provided.

The statement also did not specify whether human trials were conducted.

The IIBR was established in 1952 as part of the Israel Defence Forces' Science Corps, and later became a civilian organization.

Three CRPF jawans, one other die in militant attack in Handwara

 Four people — three CRPF jawans and a physically challenged boy of 14 years — were killed when several terrorists attacked a group of CRPF personnel in 

Handwara

 tehsil’s Wangam village on Monday evening, barely a day after four Army soldiers, including a colonel and a major, and a police SI were killed fighting terrorists in the same tehsil.

The band of terrorists managed to escape under cover of darkness and a search operation was underway at the time this report was filed.

Three Central Reserve Police Force jawans and one unidentified person was killed in an attack in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday afternoon.

“At around 6 p.m., unknown militants attacked CRPF troops of the 92 Battalion deployed for law and order duties near Wangam Stop in the Qaziabad area of Handwara. Three CRPF jawans were injured in the attack and succumbed to their injuries,” said a CRPF spokesperson.

CRPF sources said the militants engaged the CRPF personnel in a stand-off fire, before fleeing from the spot. Two CRPF men died on the spot, they said.

The police spokesman said that during the cross firing one civilian was also got killed in Handwara. Earlier, the deceased was suspected to be a militant. “No weapon was recovered from the pit where the person was found dead,” a senior official said. Locals said the deceased is a local 17-year-old youth.

The police said the militants took advantage of dense foliage of nearby orchards to escape from the spot.

Immediately after the attack, the CRPF personnel made an attempt to repulse the attack and chased the militants. “A cordon and search operation by the CRPF was immediately launched after the attack to trace the militants,” the CRPF official said.

The attack comes just a day after four soldiers, including two officers, and a policeman, were killed in an 18-hour long operation, also in Handwara.

Hindu saints threaten to come out on streets if Palghar, Bulandshahr incident not investigated properly

While the investigation of the Palghar incident was still ongoing, two saints were murdered in UP's Bulandshahr. 

The incidents of saints being murdered in Palghar, Maharashtra, and Bulandshahr in UP are examples of antisocial activities aimed at affecting the peace and harmony in the country. Maharashtra's chief minister’s immediate action of ordering the arrest of all those involved in the Palghar incident is highly commendable. While the investigation of the Palghar incident was still ongoing, two saints were murdered in UP's Bulandshahr.

The two incidents, that happened almost back to back, have infuriated the Hindu saint community of the Braj region. In Agra division’s Vrindavan town, hundreds of saints observed a vow of silence for a day to offer their condolences to the deceased saints and demanded that the Yogi Adityanath and Uddhav Thackeray governments take strict action against the people who are involved in the murder of the Observing a ‘Condemnation Day’, the saints said that the country is in lockdown. As soon as the lockdown ends, the saint community will come on the streets if action is not taken against the culprits. Hindu outfit ‘Adhyatma Raksha Manch’ National President Acharya Atul Krishna Goswami told India Today that the saints are the axis of Sanatan Dharma. The Maharashtra government is trying to save the murder accused. The saint community of the Braj region wants to warn the Uddhav Thackrey government of dire consequences if it tries to save those accused of the murder..

Goswami demanded that the central government form a strict law against mob lynchings and CBI inquiry must be ordered in both the Palghar and Bulandshahr cases. A fast track court should also be set up in the cases.

This comes a day after Palghar Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh issued orders to transfer almost complete staff of Kasa police station. The police station is responsible for law and order in the Palghar village where the lynching took place.
